'Daybreakers' Trailer HD

A great Aussie made film that is amazingly low budget but looks slicker than most Hollywood flicks. Great performances from Dafoe (as ever) and Hawke. Fab little vampire movie. Go see it!

The best websites are useful and ugly...

I pity the fool who thinks web site 'bling' will equate to 'ka-ching'...

Clicking the title of this post reveals an old article from Gerry McGovern that’s still incredibly valid, and apart from changing the word 'ugly' to 'plain' I have to agree with him wholeheartedly.

Of all the sites I visit in a day, that I see, hear about or are in the most popular web wise, the truly very pretty sites, ain't high on the list for most users. Instead Google, Gmail, Ebay, Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, Craigs list, and Delicious are all some of the worlds busiest sites, and all are incredibly functional and useful, and that’s exactly why they have been a huge success. These sites have understood who the web is for, and have remained at their core, minimal, simple, and plain in design.

Why? Because yet again its not about your designer, it's about your user, that little person who y'know pays the bills? Function, usability, content, and then by all means some eye candy, but truly less is more on the web. Even less on Mobile.

I'd say the sites I mention, are all actually very pretty on the eye, but then I've been told in the past that the perspective and focus on end users and simplifying pages, equates to somehow "dumbing them down."

I'll stick with my perspective and the sites that seem to be getting the traffic, and the point of who the web is for.

9 The Movie

Got to see a free preview of '9' recently. A stellar voice cast, and a truly amazing piece of work to look at. 9 portrays and incredibly bleak and desolate world through almost 'little big planet' style sack people and their unfolding story.

Some truly horrific looking elements appear through the movie, adding the Tim Burton goth like stamp over it (he co-produced it). Sadly the story weakens half way through, but remains a great looking film until the end. The screen we saw this on was not the best and fairly small, and I'd imagine this would be pretty amazing in high definition. 9 is out on the 9th December. For fanboys (and girls) the original short movie that I believe inspired the movie is below.

Bringing back core principles and values...

...which for many of us never went away. However for many others, the core pursuit of money, and 'more' (listen to the lyrics) as a whole objective, has led to most of our world losing a grip on these important aspects. To be specific, were talking namely customer service and having generally accepted good values.

Quite often these are long forgotten in many areas, yet I notice are now creeping back on to the agenda more often as businesses suddenly wake up to this thing called 'social media', and become suddenly very aware of these very small, barely known web sites such as a thing called facebook and YouTube to name a few tiny web sites...

Sarcasm aside, Gary Vaynerchuk is a strong advocate for customer service and good values and recently joined the 'podfather' Leo Laporte and 'Geekess' Amber MacArthur on the net@nite podcast. One topic discussed, which is a core thread through all of Gary's work, is his love for customer service, and how he appreciates and uses these interactions he has with his customers, across all his work. It's refreshing stuff as there just isn't enough focus on this, and yet for most of us in business, it should be #1 on our list!

A great interview and refreshing stuff as usual, when either of these three people are involved. Click the post title to get hold of the stream/mp3 or format that suits you best.
